A few of our favorite things…

Monday, December 17th, 2007

It’s the most wonderful time of the year…And just in case you were wondering what to get us for the holidays, here are a few of our favorite gifts!

For those of us who may have a little trouble getting up in the morning (you know who you are), the NH500BGE/source25162/cm_venChannelAdv/cm_catGifts.com/cm_plafeeds/cm_ite_NH500BGE”>Clocky Runaway Alarm clock will help us get a move on. The alarm rings, rings again, and if you don’t get up, it will roll itself right off your night stand and continue to annoy you by bumping into walls, shoes, whatever you have littering your floor, until you physically get up and turn it off. Well, I may have just talked myself out of that gift :)

You know when you say to yourself, “I really wish I had that on video…” Have no fear, the Flip Video 30-Minute Camcorder will help you capture those special (or embarrassing) moments forever. It is small enough for your pocket and has a nifty USB adapter that hooks up to your computer so uploading that video of your boss singing karaoke at the holiday party to YouTube will be a snap (not that I condone that type of behavior…)

Who can honestly say they have NOT done a fantastic air guitar rendition of Wolfmother’s “Woman”? Well, why not invite a few friends over and put on Rock Band for XBox and relive your dreams of becoming the next Jimi Hendrix. It’s kinda like a garage band except you actually sound good (so you can’t blame everything on the drummer).

Raise a glass of the bubbly for New Years! Don’t worry, you didn’t have one glass too many…the limited edition bottle of Piper Heidsieck champagne was designed by the fabulous and brilliant design duo Viktor & Rolf and is supposed to be upside down.

Of course, no other stocking stuffer besides the Oral Fix BYOB would do! Remember to order soon to take advantage of the 10% discount as well as the 10% donation to Comedy Cures.

Happy Holiday’s everyone and cheers to a fantastic 2008!

Oral Fix supports the OUT100 awards

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Hello Hello again!

Very exciting news over here at the Chocolate Factory.

Every year, OUT Magazine does an annual OUT100 Awards show to celebrate the achievements of all the people who helped pave the way for the gay community. This year, Tori Spelling and Tim Gunn (make it work people!) were the honored hosts. Among those honored were Jennifer Hudson, Marc Jacobs, Mary-Louise Parker, and there was an incredible performance by Miss Chaka Khan herself!

Oral Fixation mints were the sweet hit of the night. We were included in the gift bags alongside other notable items like Calvin Klein underware, Trojans, and Absolut 100 vodka (I think I am seeing the pattern here, lol!) The event was sponserd by Target, everywhere you looked were glittering red Target symbols and of course an audience full of gorgeous celebs, socialites, and us common folk alike.

We were thrilled to be included in such a fun and important event. Can’t wait until next year!!

Until next time…

Number 1 in Cambodia

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

That’s right Oral Fix fans, if you are ever out and about traveling the world and find yourself lost in Southeast Asia without your mint fix, fret no further. Oral Fixation Mints have debuted in India, Laos, and Cambodia to an explosive response and we are ecstatic. One of our new accounts in Cambodia has shared a few pictures of their proudly displayed Oral Fixation Mints and we are blown away. How cool is that coffee shop with the giant coffee bag out front?

Happy Halloween! And All that Jazz…

Happy Halloween Oral Fixers!

Halloween has struck Manhattan! It is always pretty amusing during Halloween Week, you never know what you are going to see on the subway or walking down the street. Just this morning, I encountered a Hannibal Lector, a Killer Bee, and countless business men and women proudly displaying their orange button downs under their black suits – even corporate America is subtly “costumed”.

One incredibly fabulous party this week was the Absolut 100 and UrbanDaddy Roaring 20’s Halloween Gala. All the men got into character by doning tuxedos, flyboy outfits, and paperboy caps while the women did their best Charleston with the flapper fringe well, flapping. The party was held in a restored mansion in Tribeca, cars from the era were lined up outside, and a crowd of paparazzi were waiting to take pictures. Very glamorous!

Once we walked into the mansion, we were met with cigarette girls handing out, you guessed it, Oral Fixation mints! Since the tins are reminiscent of 1920’s cigarette cases, it was a perfect fit. The mints were an absolute (pun intended) hit! The Dreamland Orchestra played hits from back in the day and kept us Fox Trotting well into the night. As the Absolut 100 vodka flowed, we clinked our martini glasses and toasted to our trip back in time to the Roaring ’20’s.

They say Halloween is when the ghosts come out to play. I only hope the spirits that haunt me are flappers and dandies, those crazy kids know how to party! Happy Halloween!!!

Mint Tetris Master

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Whenever I get back from lunch and have a few moments left to spare for some “me” time at work I always play, MINT TETRIS. Haven’t played? Well you definitely should give it a shot. Apparently, someone that plays is really good because I never beat that top score. Go on Mint Tetris Master, name yourself! I definitely think one of our next promotions should tie into scoring points on Mint Tetris. What do you think Daily Fixers? Write to us, mints@oralfix.com and let us know what you think.

Fire Train!

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

Fire
Hopewell, NJ is a pretty quiet town. That’s why when I got a call last evening from Henry saying the “Railroad Tracks are on fire!” I ran back to the Chocolate Factory to see what was up.

The Chocolate Factory, as you know, is the Oral Fixation HQ. Our current address is 53A Railroad Pl. As in, if there’s a fire on the Railroad tracks, there’s a fire within yards of the Oral Fixation offices!

I rode my bike up to the Hopewell Railroad Station where I saw dozens of emergency vehicles driving around the rarely used tracks, which are only travelled by freight cars.

I couldn’t see any fire, so i rode a bit further down Railroad Place past the Chocolate Factory, which was perfectly safe from any danger, and then I saw it: The forest was a-light with bonfire size flames all the way across the horizon where the banks of the train tracks are laid from East to West.

Fire Engines soon screeched past me. Like out of a silent film, the team of three firemen ran off the truck and snapped the hose onto the fire hydrant in front of me and shouted to other bystanders – “Get out of the way!”. They then proceeded to put the flames out one bush at time all the way down the tracks.

I soon caught up with Henry and Frank (the most recent addition to our Hopewell office) who were sitting on a nearby hill as one might watch fireworks. The understatement of the year, Henry said something like, “Did you see the fire?” Uh, yes. Having safely been doused, we ventured onto the tracks nearby and looked East. As far as the eye could see the brush along the tracks was lit and smoking.

Frank witnessed the whole thing: “I was outside on the phone, and from over the Tomato Factory (a neighboring antique shop) I saw what looked like fireworks travelling over the roof. It was pretty crazy, because the train was loud, as usual, but this time it was shooting sparks all over the place and everything was catching on fire behind it. The train just kept going and all of a sudden everything was on fire.”

My theory was that either the Crypt Keeper or Ozzy Osbourne was riding this Crazy Train that Breathed Fire all the way across the New Jersey landscape apparently without end.

We stayed and watched the efficient Hopewell Volunteer Fire Dept. put out the flames, then went back home to an otherwise typically quiet night. As we left we could here other fire sirens going off to the west as the train set town after town ablaze. (that’s our theory)

I checked the news and heard no mention of the Fire Breathing Train, but like I said, Hopewell’s a quiet town. Though it was the site of the Lindbergh Baby kidnapping in 1932.

While not the crime of the century, the fire was still the most town excitement we’ve had in quite a while.

New Flavors!

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

New Tins!Today we happily announce the arrival of four (yes, four!) new flavors of Oral Fixation Mints. After many long hours in our secret mint lab, mixing up the most delicious recipes we could muster, we finally settled on: Antioximints (green tea mints), Mimosa Mint (orange mint cocktails), Fabulous Fruit (fruity tropical mints), and Jasmints (herbal jasmine mints). We’ve made a set of stunningly beautiful tins in which to package these flavors, and they are now all available using our BYOB box builder. Also be sure to check out the wax paper and engraved mint designs that accompany these tins.

Antioximints is inspired by the ancient ritual of the Japanese tea ceremony. The tin facade features a steaming tea cup, flanked on either side by the Japanese characters for “green tea”. The sides of the tin contain a range of characters, each referring to a different variety of green tea. The wax paper contains words of wisdom about the effects of tea-drinking.

Mimosa Mint carries a wedding theme, with a bubbly Mimosa on the tin facade, bubbling up the tin, around the embossed Oral Fixation logo. The sides of the tin feature streams of bubbles, and the wax paper inside depicts a couple toasting, on wedding day.

Fabulous Fruit is our wildest flavor, designed with a tropical theme in a hot pink tin, adorned with twin flamingos and a hula dancer. Tropical fruits line the sides of the tin, and a giant stylized flamingo resides on the wax paper inside.

Jasmints is our most delicate flavor, designed with a floral garden theme, with radiant jasmine flowers blossoming across the tin’s facade, and growing along the sides of the tin. The wax paper inside depicts a single bouquet of flowers on a stark white background.

Enjoy!

Lovelines

Thursday, June 15th, 2006

Lovelines is an online art piece created by myself (Jonathan Harris) and Sepandar Kamvar. Lovelines employs large scale blog analysis to illustrate human desire, as expressed online, using a system we developed for our recent collaboration, We Feel Fine. Our statement about the project is as follows:

Lovelines is an exploration of human desire.

Through large scale blog analysis, Lovelines illuminates the topography of the emotional landscape between love and hate, as experienced by countless normal humans keeping personal online journals.

Using a data collection engine created by the artists for their recent collaboration, We Feel Fine ( www.wefeelfine.org ), Lovelines examines thousands of blogs every few minutes to find expressions of love and hate, posted by all manner of people. When it can, Lovelines identifies and saves the age, gender, and geographical location of the person who wrote the post, and then presents that information along with the post. The entries range from frivolous to profound, offering a glimpse into the hearts and minds of people blogging about their wants and needs.

Lovelines presents a stark white screen, bounded on the bottom by a slider running from “Love” to “Hate”, with a draggable heart that becomes scratched out to the point of illegibility as the heart approaches “Hate”. As the slider is pulled through Love, Like, Want, Indifference, Dislike, and Hate, words and pictures appear above to represent the chosen state of desire or despair.

Lovelines is structured around three movements: “Words”, “Pictures”, and “Superlatives”. Words and Pictures iteratively present individual examples of human desire, while Superlatives provides a daily zeitgeist of the most loved, wanted, liked, and hated things. Interactive timelines represent the changing magnitude of love and hate over time, and allow navigation into the past.

The artists were invited to make this piece by Oral Fixation Mints ( www.oralfix.com ), a breath mint company devoted to “making everyday objects beautiful”, of which Jonathan Harris is a co-founder. We realize that the heart of all fixations is the desire to own, possess, and consume. Great desires imitate the physics of giant pendulums: the higher they rise, the deeper they fall. In this sense, love is inextricably tied to hate, desire to despair. Lovelines walks the line between these two extremes, painting pictures of the shifting landscape of desire.

Constructed entirely from found artifacts – words and pictures posted to blogs – Lovelines draws its identity from a world of strangers, brought together by shared degrees of desire.

Go on and open up.

Prachie Narain in the Gallery

Thursday, April 20th, 2006

NarainWe’re happy to announce the addition of Prachie Narain’s work to the Oral Fixation Gallery.

Born in Nepal, Prachie has also lived in India, England, and now, the US. She graduated from Princeton University in 2005, where she majored in Comparative Literature and collaborated with the Visual Arts department. She was involved in several exhibits at the university, including a solo exhibit in April 2005. She has enjoyed painting for as long as she can remember, and even as a medical student at Dartmouth College, she continues to make ample time to explore new styles and subjects and grow as an artist. She mostly paint in oils, and her work experiments with surrealism, impressionism, and the abstract. Among her influences are Munch, Kandinsky, Monet, Guston, and Diebenkorn.

In her words:

My work explores the struggles of self and culture in the modern world of transience, mirrors, and metal. At first, the distorted reflections and confused contexts seem to suggest a fragmented, lost identity, but the abstractions of an image or an idea spark a new understanding of the original. In this way, the work evokes a dreamlike, passionate, provocative quality in everyday objects.

Go check it out!
